Lesson 1

Building a Bridge Over Water

Hello, students, and welcome to your first class - building bridges over water!
Below, you will find a step by step tutorial. I will be posting this for you all to review, but will also be updating later tonight with pictures for those who are more visual. So, if you need pictures and don't see them yet, come back in a few hours. I promise you they will be up here before the end of the night (of course, that's my time here on the East Coast, but it will be early in the night, so it should be early/earlier for everyone else).

Alright, let's begin!

There are a few different ways to do this. Some involve cheat codes, which can be a little more difficult if you don't know what to expect when using the codes, and they can sometimes cause funky things to happen. This lesson will not use any cheat codes, so nothing should get messed up in your game.

  1. First, you'll want to imagine where you want your body of water to be and where you want your bridge to be. Your bridge can be simple and straight, or it can go in different directions. Draw this out on paper if you'd like.

  2. Once you have an idea, click on the foundation tool. Put a foundation where you want your bridge to be. You will want to make it twice as big as your bridge. So, for example, if you want your bridge to be two square wide, make the foundation four squares wide. You will also want to add one extra row of squares at the start and end of the bridge. So, if your bridge is 10 squares in length, add an extra row at one end and an extra row at the other end.

  3. Next, you will want to delete the foundation in the center. Delete the middle two rows of squares. The end result should look like a rectangle with space in the middle. You basically just want an outline of foundation. One row on the left, one row at the top, one row on the right, and one row on the bottom.

  4. In this blank area, you should still see floor tiles. Add a floor in the blank, middle area - DO NOT add floor tiles onto the actual foundation. Pick whatever floor tile you'd like - this is your bridge. So, you may want to choose some kind of wood flooring.

  5. Once you've done that, you will need to delete the foundation on the left and right side of the bridge. DO NOT delete the foundation blocks at the start and end of the bridge. The end result should be foundation, bridge (the floor tiles you just added), foundation.

  6. Next, add a fence on the sides of the bridge (from foundation to foundation). Add stairs to the foundation blocks on each end. If your bridge is two squares wide, you can widen the stairs to two using the slider in the stair area.

  7. Add flooring to the two foundation areas so it matches the rest of the bridge.

  8. If you want to get fancy, you can even change the foundation blocks themselves (the sides) so they're not red bricks. You can do this by adding wall paper to them. Play around with designs and have fun with this.

  9. Now, you can add the water! Use the pond tool and make your body of water however you'd like. Make sure you make it under the bridge, too!

  10. Decorate the area with flowers, trees, lily pads, etc, to make it look nice.

If you want to take this one step further, you can make the bridge wavy. This will involve cheat codes. Follow the steps below if you'd like to try to make a wavy looking bridge.

  1. Complete all of the steps except for the last step - adding the water. Build the bridge to how you want it to look, then open your cheat area. For PC, you must press ctrl + shift + 'c'. Then type ConstrainFloorElevation false.

  2. Go into your terrain tools and choose the one that allows you to raise the ground terrain. Click a few spaces under the bridge to raise the terrain. Thanks to the cheat code, this should also raise the floor of the bridge. Do this in a couple areas and you will have the wave effect.

  3. Be sure to cancel the cheat when you're done so it doesn't mess with your other building activities. To do this, open the cheat bar and type ConstrainFloorElevation true.

And there you have it! A beautiful bridge! Play around with it, make it look nice, and take lots of pictures and post them for us all to see!

Remember, you have all week to do this. This is your assignment for the week and it should be posted by Friday.

If you have any questions, please post them in this topic. I will be checking frequently and will do my best to help you in any way I can. Happy building!

This is a HUGE fail...

Post  CraigyBoy2 on Fri Jun 22, 2012 3:20 am

I admit this is one of my worst works, as I had to rush and this was extremely hurried! I am so busy lately and haven't had the time to do it.. So keeping in mind that I didn't have long, my game is going crazy and recently developed bad graphics.... How did I do?

This is just one photo but I'll get more up later! I need to go do personal stuff, so might not be till tommorow Very Happy

I can't see much of the bridge, but from what I can see, it looks pretty good Smile

Sorry! Here are the others....

Another one with a better view of bridge!

And thats the last one... Unless you want a couple more. I chose a wooden bridge rather than a more modern looking one, mostly because I wanted it to look a little more natural amongst it's surrounding and all. So thats why I went for that. Then I picked a colour of the wood very carefully, I wanted it to look good and blend with everything else so I chose a light brown. Then for the stairs and railings I used matching styles and colour as it seemed nice and simple. The over all look, to me, is okay, with a nice simplicity and natuaral approach. Thank You! Very Happy

How is it?

Lol, well, grades don't really matter. What matters is that you understand how to do it and did it correctly. I think the bridge is a fairly simple thing to do. If it looks like a bridge, then you're good. If it doesn't - try again. More like pass/fail, I guess xD lol. But A+ sounds better Smile
